REHAU redefines side impact protection
In addition to many technical innovations, the “Citroën C4 Cactus” also offers exciting detail with respect to safety. Polymer specialist and automotive supplier REHAU has developed a new generation of side impact protection for the model range: “Airbump” impact absorbers filled with air and fitted on the long side of the bodywork.
This involves innovative door panelling based on air-filled capsules in polyurethane, a thermoplastic that stands out for its high level of flexibility. If the vehicle is subjected to a side impact, the capsules can sink in by up to two centimetres then return to their original shape. This offers protection that is in demand particularly in the traffic of large cities or in car parks.
REHAU developed the market innovation on its French site in Morhange. “The development of innovations is fundamental for REHAU all over the world and characteristic of our principal strategic focus,” Stéphane Heising, Head of Key Account Management PSA Peugeot Citroën at REHAU, emphasises. “In today’s automotive industry, marketable innovations are undisputed major growth factors.”
As an absolute market innovation, Airbumps once again underline the competence of REHAU as a development partner to well-known automotive manufacturers. The development partnership between REHAU and PSA Peugeot Citroën has existed for over ten years – a constructive co-operation for which the polymer specialist alone has won four prestigious awards from the car manufacturer in the last five years.
