The so-called linear economy follows the ‘take – make – waste’ principle. This means that raw materials are processed into products that are simply disposed of at the end of their life cycle. This leads to the destruction of many valuable (and finite) raw materials that could actually have been recycled.

Time to rethink: circular economy at REHAU

For years, REHAU has actively pursued the approach of the so-called circular economy. Our own recycling facilities and large-scale investments are supposed to ensure that once a product has been manufactured, it remains in the material cycle for as long as possible – without creating additional waste.

Our RAUVISIO crystal, brilliant and noir products meet the PEFC criteria for a end-to-end supply chain for sustainable forest products.

RAUKANTEX edgebands are one of the oldest product ranges at REHAU and the backbone of our Furniture Solutions product. Sustainability also plays a key role here: in the responsible use of raw materials, the continuous improvement of our pollutant-free formulations, and the maximum recycling and reuse of production and processing waste. 100% of the production at our European edgeband plants is already run using climate-neutral electricity.

Save resources, develop sustainable furniture components

Sustainability is more than just a word for the Furniture Solutions division. “It is not a trend; it is part of our corporate philosophy,” says Daniel Elfe-Degel, Team Leader Product Management and Sustainability Officer for REHAU’s Furniture Solutions division. By producing edgebands and surfaces in a way that conserves resources, the division consistently offers the interiors sector new possibilities for the design of sustainable living spaces.

The division is constantly expanding its activities to save resources. Since 2020, for example, European edgeband production facilities have used 100% renewable energy sources which have been generated in-house. There are also two new sustainable product lines: for the production of RAUKANTEX eco, 50% post-industrial recycled matter is used, while RAUKANTEX evo is produced using non-fossil primary raw materials instead of crude oil (in contrast to conventional polypropylene edgebands).

The path ahead for products geared towards a circular economy is clearly defined for Furniture Solutions: the aim is to increase the proportion of recycled materials used while continuing to find alternative raw materials and increase our use of renewable energy sources globally.
