At 40 km in length, the Sofia Metro is currently the only metro system in Bulgaria. Opened on January 28, 1998, it currently consists of two lines and 34 stations. Around 450,000 passengers use the metro network in Sofia each day.
A third line has been under construction since 2015. In contrast to the two other lines, the trains on the third line will be supplied with electricity via an overhead line, and all stations will be fitted with platform screen doors.
