Sustainability in millwork and cabinetry

How zero-joint edgeband supports greener builds

From materials to fabrication processes, the decisions you make on the shop floor impact the sustainability of your millwork and cabinetry. Even the smallest details make a difference, including the edgeband you use to complete your cabinets.

While edgeband may seem like a finishing touch, it plays a meaningful role in how efficiently your shop operates. Compared to traditional glue-based edgeband, zero-joint edgeband helps reduce waste, simplify fabrication and deliver a cleaner, more durable finished edge. When made with recyclable polymer material options, such as polypropylene (PP) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), your shop can better meet clients’ demands for greener interiors.

Read on for a closer look at how zero-joint edgeband creates more sustainable millwork and cabinetry:

Smarter processing for sustainable production

1. Minimize waste by eliminating glue

Traditional edgeband bonded with EVA glue or PUR adhesives creates excess waste, from residue left on finished panels and machinery to glue pot cleaning and disposal. Zero-joint edgeband eliminates glue altogether. Instead of applying adhesive to the panel, a functional layer is already integrated into the edgeband, which acts as the bonding agent between the edgeband and the board.

Without glue in the equation, cabinet shops can reduce material waste, remove glue pot maintenance and run cleaner operations.

2. Simplify fabrication and save labor

Glue-based edgeband brings time-consuming variables into fabrication, including heating adhesives, making manual adjustments and maintaining glue pots. With zero-joint edgeband, the functional layer is already applied, so you’re only bringing two components together: the edgeband and the board. During processing, this layer is activated by a laser, hot-air or NIR edgebander, fusing the edgeband directly to the board.

Fewer steps and no glue handling streamline your workflow, allowing your team to focus on what matters most.

3. Deliver a cleaner, more durable edge

Beyond efficiency in the shop, zero-joint edgeband delivers performance advantages that support longer-lasting millwork and cabinetry. Glue-based edgeband can be susceptible to inconsistent bonding, delamination and failure when exposed to heat or moisture over time. Since zero-joint edgeband forms a continuous, uniform bond, it offers excellent resistance to heat, moisture and delamination. This helps cabinetry last longer and reduces the need for repairs or replacements.

Plus, without a visible glue line, zero-joint edgeband gives cabinetry a more modern appearance with a seamless edge, appealing to clients seeking a high-end aesthetic.

Choosing greener materials for modern cabinetry

The materials chosen for zero-joint edgeband play an important role in minimizing environmental impact and maximizing long-term performance.
In REHAU LaserEdgeTM zero-joint edgeband, the functional layer is typically PP. The decorative top layer can be made of PP or ABS, with many cabinet shops choosing ABS due to its familiarity and ease of processing.

Polypropylene (PP)

Maximum ecological benefit

As a neutral synthetic material made entirely from petroleum, PP offers the highest level of ecological benefit compared to alternative edgeband materials. It provides the most color stable chemistry, supporting optimal long-term appearance. From a fabrication standpoint, PP is highly flexible and suitable for both straight and contour processing. It also provides ease of processing with efficient heat conductivity and absorption. In the finished product, PP delivers excellent UV stability, high heat resistance and extremely low shrinkage, helping cabinetry maintain its integrity over time and minimizing repairs or replacements.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)

A practical, greener alternative to PVC

ABS is a thermoplastic material that serves as a widely adopted, more sustainable alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Unlike PVC, which contains chlorine and additives that raise environmental and disposal concerns, ABS is chlorine‑free and up to 99% naturally recyclable. When it comes to fabrication, ABS processes similarly to PVC, but is lighter in weight and highly heat resistant. Transitioning from PVC to ABS is straightforward as there are little to no changes in planning, running or adjustments on machines. This makes ABS an accessible step toward more sustainable cabinetry without disrupting workflows.
