REHAU is launching the RE.GUARD smart water control system

Whether it’s from a dripping tap, a leaky threaded connection or a burst pipe, the cost of water escaping uncontrollably can quickly add up. In creating the RE.GUARD water control system, the polymer expert REHAU has developed a solution that minimises risks and offers convenient operation to boot.

Statistically, water damage occurs in a residential building every 30 seconds in Germany. And it has particularly serious consequences too, because if the defect is only noticed when it’s already too late, in most cases large parts of the building are already completely sodden. From October 2019, the polymer specialist REHAU is offering the RE.GUARD water control system – a smart monitoring tool for detached and semi-detached houses that monitors the main water pipe with high-precision, durable sensor technology. The award-winning system’s quick and independent response helps in the long term to minimise the risk of serious water damage. RE.GUARD was crowned winner of the Red Dot Design Award 2019 and the ‘Best Product of the Year 2019’ category of the Plus X Award in recognition of its form and functionality.

Smart monitoring

The RE.GUARD control system monitors the water flow rate in pipes using ultrasound technology, assessing it in real time thanks to integrated software. To ensure reliable detection of drip-based leaks (that usually go unnoticed and can lead to severe damage) and burst pipes, RE.GUARD measures the pressure drop too. The system evaluates the water pressure when the ball valve is closed and continuously compares the results with previously defined limit values. If RE.GUARD detects an irregularity, the system immediately and independently shuts off the main water pipe. The certified Z-Wave wireless standard can be used to position additional flexible RE.GUARD water detectors at sensitive spots such as the washing machine or dishwasher for the purpose of extensive damage prevention, so any emergency situation is instantly detected by means of measuring the floor moisture levels. The water consumption can be tracked using the RE.GUARD app. This helps in the long term to identify potential savings with respect to consumption.

Intuitive installation and central control via an app

No matter if it is a new building, renovation or retrofitting, thanks to the compact design, the award-winning RE.GUARD water control system, can be easily installed on the main water line directly downstream of the water meter. Integrating RE.GUARD upstream of the water minimises the risk of a leak caused by a defective filter. By using the intuitive installation wizard, the RE.GUARD system can also be put easily into with just a few steps.

The RE.GUARD system is controlled using the RE.GUARD app. It can be used to easily set and adjust parameters and limit values for the sampling duration, sampling volume and flow rate, as well as the time and frequency of drip-based leak measurements. If limit values were exceeded when water consumption was elevated and thus led to the water pipe being shut off, the app offers the option of easily re-opening the pipe using the manual control system.

High-quality materials guarantee long-term safety

Water routes and fittings of the RE.GUARD water control system are based on the lead-free gunmetal alloy of RAUTITAN RX+. The alloy is standardised by DIN SPEC 2701 and, since 2018, has been on the approved list of metal materials suitable for drinking water hygiene of the German Federal Environmental Agency. Thanks to its innovative ultrasound measuring, the RE.GUARD system gets by without any moving parts in the measuring section and is thus particularly low-maintenance and low-wear. What’s more, optional emergency batteries enable faultless operation in the event of a power failure.

Secure networking thanks to Z-Wave

Security takes top priority when it comes to Z-Wave. All of the RE.GUARD system components communicate with one another via Z-Wave, the certified and encrypted international wireless standard. This protects the RE.GUARD system from direct external attacks and allows its operation without internet access or a cloud connection.

With a high networking density and a reserved frequency range, Z-Wave enables a faultless connection. With a range of up to 30 metres within buildings, the wireless signals even penetrate through solid basement ceilings and walls since they have far higher material penetration than WLAN does. Integration into private home automation networks is also possible using Z-Wave; certification of all Z-Wave-enabled devices guarantees compatibility. Due to short transmission times and low transmission power of the devices, the energy consumption and radiation exposure is also significantly lower than with WLAN.
