From September 4 to 30, employees of the medium-sized family-owned company REHAU carried out cleanup campaigns at various locations to set an example for a waste-free, healthful environment. More than 30 locations around the world participated in this year's World Cleanup Day collecting about 24 tons of waste.
At beaches, rivers, forests, factory grounds and parking lots - equipped with protective gear such as gloves, gripping arms and high-visibility vests - almost 1,000 REHAU colleagues worked side by side to clear the environment of trash. The events were organized by local employees using a variety of unique approaches: While employees in Italy cleaned up together by the sea and then visited a rescue station for stranded sea turtles, employees in Leesburg (United States) brought their old electrical appliances to be disposed of professionally. Children were also busy collecting at many locations. In Brake (Germany), for example, the local kindergarten took part in the REHAU clean-up campaign. REHAU trainees then gave the children an age-appropriate presentation on the consequences of environmental pollution and tips on how to avoid it.
During the clean-up campaigns, the employees collected and disposed of almost 24 tons of waste. In addition to construction waste and cigarette butts, a bed, a toilet bowl, bicycles, a mannequin, toys and a sofa were collected.
"As a family-owned business, we feel a responsibility not only to our customers and employees, but also to society and the environment. World Cleanup Day is a great opportunity to get involved together. I am proud of how many colleagues participated again this year," says Uwe Böhlke, CEO REHAU Industries.
World Cleanup Day is a bottom-up citizen movement to clean up pollution. It takes place every year on the third Saturday in September and mobilizes millions of volunteers in more than 190 countries and territories. The goal is to clear the world of carelessly discarded trash.
