"We understand that if you're going to be in a building for hours and hours, comfort has to be the main consideration. That goes from the temperature, humidity and ventilation systems down to seating and lighting.”

--Peter Schlect, while at Chicago-based Solomon Cordwell Buenz

Education Projects

Radiant buildings used 32% less energy than the EIA 2012 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) average.  In a school or university setting, energy savings of this magnitude could mean more funds may be shifted to programming.

You don't need to sacrifice comfort to be energy efficient!  A New Buildings Institute survey of 1,645 building occupants found, “In a space using a radiant system, a person has a 66% chance of having an equal or higher temperature satisfaction than in an all-air conditioned building.”

Quiet is often a commodity in an education building. Radiant systems operate silently, so there will be one less noise variables in the classrooms and study halls.

Radiant Cooling in Schools and Universities Online Seminar

This free, pre-recorded online seminar is an overview of energy efficient heating and cooling applications, with case studies in education facilities.

 Watch here

Agenda:

  • Define the variables of human thermal comfort
  • Describe the methods of using radiant cooling systems to maximize the benefits of energy-efficiency heating/cooling sources
  • Explain system design considerations to be aware of in order to effectively utilize radiant heating and cooling technology
  • Identify opportunities to utilize district heating technology

“To include radiant cooling in a project of this size in this climate for a residential structure was something we hadn’t seen,”

Todd Zima, design principal at Studio Gang says. Sharing the capabilities of the REHAU radiant system with Mortenson Construction and university officials convinced them it was the way to go.

"On a campus already committed to energy efficiency, UBC Engineering Student Centre’s energy use index measures 160 kilowatt-hours per square meter per year (50.7 kBtu/ft2/yr), nearly one-third less than the average campus wide,"

said David Woodson, managing director of UBC’s energy and water services after two years of performance.
