A new innovation in storm window protection: 3 things to know

Hurricane season is not over yet. Make the most of it with RAUSHIELD.

Each year, hurricane season costs homeowners in coastal regions of the U.S. billions of dollars. This year may turn out to be the most expensive ever. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially ends Nov. 30, was the busiest on record.

To help homeowners with this growing threat, we’re proud to introduce a new, innovative solution to the marketplace: The RAUSHIELD™ storm protection system. Available with our REHAU System 190 hung-slider design, this high-performance, easy-to-install window solution offers a better and more economical alternative to traditional storm window products designed with impact glass. Manufactured to our exacting standards, it easily meets hurricane impact codes in residential and light commercial buildings.

1. Storm window protection in a snap

Designed for new construction and replacement, the new 3 1/4 in (83 mm) frame with RAUSHIELD can be installed in any wall construction without disrupting the building façade. It also eliminates the need to offset shutters for anchor clearance.

Unlike other storm window treatments that require unsightly anchors and the expertise of often hard-to-find anchor contractors, the RAUSHIELD storm protection system can be set up in four easy steps. Even better, it requires no special tools or equipment.

Featuring patented integral anchor points extruded into the frame, at the threat of a storm, homeowners can simply snap off a removal cover strip that conceals the anchor points. A reusable storm protection fabric panel that meets Zone 3 wind load requirements is then easily attached.

2. Best-in-class storm window performance

The frame’s side-load design boosts structural performance by containing the sash within the frame channels. The sash glides smoothly into place and locks in tightly, providing 24/7 security. The fully welded frame neatly seals against water leaks that typically occur in mechanically joined systems. The fabric adds extra protection against water due to its water resistant property. Robust uPVC profiles with aluminum reinforcements allow the window to meet wind-load requirements and protect operating parts from the stress of gale-force winds.

The REHAU System 190 is manufactured using a quality management system that has been certified to the latest version of ISO 9001 and is supported by a 20-year limited warranty. It offers a consistent appearance across a wide range of opening sizes and performance requirements. It achieves impact, acoustical and thermal ratings: up to DP50; up to STC 32; OITC 27 and simulated a U-value down to 0.24. Both the standard 2 11/16 in (68.6 mm) frame and new 3 1/4 in (83 mm) frame with RAUSHIELD feature up to 3/4 in (19 mm) glazing capacity.

3. Advantages for window fabricators, homebuilders and homeowners

The RAUSHIELD storm protection system offers multiple advantages for our entire customer community, including window fabricators, homebuilders and homeowners. This innovative solution offers these advantages:

  • More economical – It reduces the cost of supplying impact-rated windows by at least 35% since it does not require the use of costly laminated glass.
  • Faster – It shortens manufacturing lead times by at least two weeks, reduces storm protection installation time, reduces callbacks and creates immediate storm readiness.
  • Aesthetically pleasing – Available in white, beige and clay that complements any building design or newly constructed home, it also comes in multiple frame options and assures a consistent appearance across all openings. Narrow profiles increase glazing areas, allowing more natural light. With no sash release levers or visible storm anchor hardware, it offers clean, crisp sightlines.
  • Impact rated – The product meets hurricane impact codes in residential and light commercial buildings.
  • Business builder – These advantages bring immediate business growth opportunities for window manufacturers and homebuilders looking for a superior and more economical window alternative that meets and/or exceeds the codes and standards for the impact market.
