LEESBURG, Va. – REHAU has broken ground on a plant expansion project that is part of a multi-million dollar investment in infrastructure and equipment at its manufacturing facility in Cullman, Ala. A groundbreaking ceremony was attended on January 14 by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, City of Cullman Mayor Max Townson, REHAU Group Board Member and Automotive CEO Niklas Braun, REHAU North America CEO Christian Fabian, representatives of Mercedes-Benz and a number of local officials.
A total capital investment of $115 million including tooling is being made to accommodate a new contract win from Mercedes-Benz to develop and produce bumper assemblies for the company’s C-Class and M-Class vehicle lines. Officially secured in January and May of 2012, the contract is expected to create approximately 200 new jobs at REHAU’s Cullman plant over the next year and a half. In addition, REHAU’s technical center in Cullman will be upgraded to accommodate the additional North American business and provide support for contract-related REHAU automotive operations outside North America.
“This contract win from Mercedes-Benz is significant not only for our Cullman plant in North America, but for REHAU as a global company, as we will be collaborating across several international regions to develop bumper solutions that can be used on vehicles in numerous countries,” said Braun. “We attribute our success in securing this contract to our internal collaborative capabilities and a solid history of operational collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. This has been a valued customer relationship for us, and we look forward to the opportunities presented by our latest contract with the company.”
“Winning this business undoubtedly speaks to our continued delivery of high-quality products and exceptional customer service here at Cullman,” said Albert von Pelser, REHAU plant manager. “Our success is the result of the combined efforts of those working in Cullman and throughout our international REHAU network, and can also be attributed to notable and ongoing support from the City of Cullman, the Cullman Economic Development Agency and the Industrial Development Board of the City of Cullman.”
“REHAU’s latest expansion is a great compliment to the hard workers who are making this company successful,” Governor Robert Bentley said. “This is also a reflection of the business-friendly climate that we have worked hard to create here in Alabama. We are committed to recruiting new jobs and to helping our companies grow and succeed. I appreciate the investment that REHAU has made in Alabama over the years. And I appreciate the hard work of everyone who has made this expansion possible.”
Congressman Robert B. Aderholt (R-AL), also commented on the expansion. “The impact of REHAU’s decision to expand its operations here in Cullman cannot be over-emphasized, particularly as these are the types of jobs that are, more and more, being sent overseas,” he said. “REHAU’s continued investment in Cullman is an important and positive contribution to the local economy.”
Initial production of the REHAU bumper assemblies is scheduled to begin mid-year. The new bumper assemblies will be included on 2015 Mercedes-Benz models. In addition to the building expansion, upgrades and additions to REHAU’s Cullman production facility include new injection molding equipment, fabrication devices and conversion of the existing paint line to an environmentally friendly water-borne paint system.
