Alex Nowfel | Engineering Intern, Furnitur

My engineering internship in the furniture division at REHAU was a valuable experience. As a mechanical engineering major at Virginia Tech, this position was directly related to what I want to pursue professionally after graduation. My main projects were Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) testing of REHAU’s cabinet materials and developing a floating shelf product. From researching and conceptualizing to prototyping and testing, I was able to see the full lifecycle of the floating shelf development. I even researched ways to add more value to the shelf with different amenities. I also had smaller tasks, such as generating an equation for our shipping calculator, translating our ordering website for our South American companies and assisting in the machine shop.

I learned a lot from my supervisor, Scott Blair, about working in a professional environment. I appreciate the effort he put in to make sure I was always busy with tasks that I would learn from. This allowed me to get the most out of my internship and prepared me for the future. He, along with the other members of the division, were always available and eager to help me with my tasks when I got stuck.

My favorite part of my internship was the variety of tasks I was given. I was given a good mix of hands-on work, as well as office work. I spent a great deal of time in the chemistry lab and the machine shop, which made my work more enjoyable.

The people that I worked with, along with my fellow interns, created a welcoming environment. I looked forward to coming to work every day.
